So it's been five weeks since the last treatment, and I've been putting off writing this update for a full week now because I just don't know what to say. Did the treatment work? Will it just take more time to show results? I honestly have no idea, and I'm feeling pretty lost right now.
The doctor did mention it could take up to three months for Liam to start feeling better, to see any real changes, but here's the thing: one of Liam's infections has started to take over. During the treatment, I started seeing purple lines spreading across his back, and they have just kept growing since. Those marks are what the Bartonella infection does to the body. I've spent way too many hours, days, weeks, months, researching what Lyme and its co-infections can do, so I recognized as soon as they popped up.
So what does this mean? The treatment actually did worked for some of the infections, but it left room for Bartonella to express itself! It was dormant for years, so I guess it's all happy now to have space to dance. Bottom line, all of Liam's infections are not eradicated!!! So shit, shit, shit!
I'm beyond words right now. We're not completely back to square one, but we're definitely not where I'd hoped we'd be. So, it's back to the local Lyme specialist we go. More local treatments, more assessments, more blood work, more of everything.
Liam has already said he's willing to try one more treatment course for his Bartonella strains (he has three of them) and after that, he's done. He said that in about five to ten years, there will be a cure, and he'll just wait for that.
On a brighter note, Liam's spirit is top. His fatigue has returned to the level it was before treatment (not as crushed as he was in Cyprus), he is sleeping well, and he's really glad to be starting online schooling in September. It's half days and 3 extra weeks of vacation per year.
I'll keep you posted in a few weeks as things progress. Hopefully with good news.
